Southside Rivers as Revitalization

Martinsville-Henry County Rivers and Trails Group:
Five Year Vision

  • Master Plan of public access points on river and river trails linked to Rails-to-Trails in Martinsville and Henry County, including a north-south trail system from the Philpott Dam to the Martinsville Dam and then a trail along the southern portion of the Smith to the North Carolina line
  • Continuation of the North Carolina Mayo River Park into Virginia
  • 1.2 mile multi-use demonstration trail for hiking, biking, horseback riding at Fieldale Iron Bridge
  • Development of public access areas on the Mayo and Smith rivers with signage, trash cans and picnic areas
  • Purchase of right-of-way from Norfolk Southern and development of Rails-to-Trails from Fieldale to Martinsville
  • Completion of city trail behind courthouse to link with Rails-to-Trails from Fieldale
  • Tributary stream watch and water quality monitoring program involving teachers, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and Trout Unlimited
  • Cleanup near rivers and derelict factories converted for river use
  • Multiuse trails at Philpott Dam and Martinsville Reservoir and other parts of the community
  • Educational outreach to community and business leaders
  • Creation of eco-businesses for outdoor and river outfitters
  • Expansion of trails behind County Office Building
  • Conservation curriculum at the new college in Martinsville
  • Improved fish habitat on the Smith River due to changes in the electric power generation regimee
