Cumberland Alliance
Groups join to protect a natural treasure
Spanning an area of over 400 miles and six states (West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama) the Cumberland area requires a concerted conservation effort, focused not only on the preservation of the natural riches of the area, but also on its economic stability.

The Alliance for the Cumberlands evolved out of a series of meeting sponsored by Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning.
The Southern Environmental Law Center is a proud member of the Alliance for the Cumberlands, a partnership of public and private organizations unified to protect the Cumberland Mountains and Plateau Region.
Among the goals of the Alliance:
- Conserve and restore the lands and waters of the Cumberland Plateau; protect the area's unique natural, cultural and recreational resources; and foster sustainable forestry and agricultural practices
- Educate the public about the need for conservation of the Plateau's wildlands and natural resources
- Promote sustainable human communities and wise stewardship of natural resources on the Cumberland Plateau.
