Associate Attorney
Charlottesville, VA • Chapel Hill, NC • Charleston, SC

The Southern Environmental Law Center is accepting applications for two-year associate attorney positions in its Charlottesville, VA; Chapel Hill, NC; and Charleston, SC offices. These are excellent opportunities to be part of an organization that is successfully addressing some of the most important and challenging environmental issues in the Southeast and the nation. Associate attorneys gain valuable experience and knowledge working with more senior attorneys on litigation and legal advocacy in state and federal courts and regulatory agencies.

About SELC:

With offices across the region (core offices in Atlanta, GA; Chapel Hill, NC; and Charlottesville, VA; and satellite offices in Asheville, NC; Charleston, SC; and Washington, DC), SELC is the only organization using law and policy expertise exclusively to protect the South's natural resources—its land, air, water, coast and wetlands—and to preserve our rural countryside and community character.

Our approach is unique—and successful. We work in Congress and state legislatures to inform environmental law; in regulatory agencies to implement environmental laws and policies; and in the courts to stop the worst abuses of southern resources and set precedents to ensure their lasting protection. SELC works collaboratively with over 100 national, state, and local groups to enhance their efficacy and achieve our common conservation goals. Our legal and policy staff comprises some of the nation's leading experts in their respective fields, and SELC is recognized as one of the most effective environmental organizations in the country. We currently have a staff of 70, including 33 attorneys. Additional information regarding our staff is available here.

Qualifications and Salary:

These are entry level positions and open to recent law graduates and practicing attorneys. A strong academic background and a commitment to SELC's mission are required. Litigation or environmental advocacy experience preferred. Salary $51-53,000 depending on experience and includes an excellent benefits package. Start date as soon as possible.
